# Request a Role

If you have at least a **Project Viewer** role on a project, you can request a higher role — for example **SQL Editor User** — on selected databases, with an optional expiration. The request follows your [custom approval](/change-database/approval/) flow (the **Request Role** source); once approved, you hold the role until it expires.

Start a request from either place:

* **Members** — in the project, go to **Manage > Members** and click **Request role**.
* **SQL Editor** — when you don't have access to a database, click **Request query**.

In the request, pick the role, optionally narrow it to specific databases and tables, and set an expiration — bounded by the workspace [maximum request expiration](/security/database-permission/expiration/#maximum-request-expiration). After you submit, an approver reviews the request issue; once it's approved, the role is granted.
